Pop star Michael Jackson has vowed that a broken foot will not stop him speaking at the Oxford Union next week, where he is to launch his Heal the Kids campaign. Jackson broke his right foot in a fall at his home in California.
Building dedicated to jet engine inventor
Jet engine inventor Sir Frank Whittle is remembered today as Coventry University names a building in his honour. The building houses courses and activities associated with engineering and the automotive industry. Sir Frank was born in Earlsdon, Coventry, in 1907.
US tests advocated for bright poor pupils
American-style Scholastic Assessment Tests would boost the number of bright, poor students in top British universities. A study for the Sutton Trust shows that 30 pupils from low-achieving state schools gained SAT scores high enough to get into an Ivy League university but only one gained the A-level grades for entry to a top British university.
Sussex students stage sit-in
Students at the University of Sussex took over part of the main administration building yesterday to protest against tuition fees. Around 30 students occupied the accounts office for the day.
