Stanford University has one of the largest campuses in the US and is one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

It was established in 1885 and opened six years later as a co-educational and non-denominational private institution.

Its location, less than an hour’s drive south of San Francisco next to Palo Alto, is in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, and the university is known for its entrepreneurial spirit.

This entrepreneurialism has its roots in the aftermath of the Second World War, when the provost encouraged innovation, resulting in a self-sufficient industry that would become Silicon Valley.

By 1970, the university had a linear accelerator and hosted part of the early network that would become the technical foundation of the internet.

The main campus spans 8,180 acres and is home to almost all the undergraduates who study at the university.

There are 700 major university buildings housing 40 departments within the three academic schools and four professional schools, alongside 18 independent laboratories, centres and institutes.

Stanford counts 21 Nobel laureates within its community, and numerous famous alumni associated with the university from the worlds of business, politics, media, sport and technology.

The 31st president of the US, Herbert Hoover, was part of the very first class at Stanford, and received a degree in geology in 1895. Currently, Stanford is also one of the leading producers of US Congress members.

The alumni include 30 living billionaires, 17 astronauts, 18 Turing Award recipients and two Fields Medallists.

Google’s co-founders met at Stanford while pursuing doctorate degrees, although neither ultimately completed their theses.

In total, companies founded by Stanford affiliates and alumni generate more than $2.7 trillion annual revenue, which would be the 10th largest economy in the world. These companies include Nike, Netflix, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, Instagram, Snapchat, PayPal and Yahoo.

The first American woman to go into space, Sally Ride, received an undergraduate degree in physics from Stanford in 1973. Just 10 years later, she made her ascent into space.

In the five years leading up to 2012, the university embarked on a challenge to raise more than $4 billion. The fundraising exceeded this target and concluded the campaign having raised $6.2 billion, which will be used for more faculty appointments, graduate research fellowships and scholarships, and construction on 38 new or existing campus buildings.

Some of the funds have already been used for large projects, including the world’s largest dedicated stem cell research facility, a new business school campus, a law school expansion, a new Engineering Quad, a campus concert hall and an art museum.

Unofficially, the Stanford motto is a German quotation “Die Luft der Freiheit weht”, which translates as “the wind of freedom blows”.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCIAL AND ACTUARIAL MATHEMATICS The Department of Financial and Actuarial Mathematics (FAM) is a friendly and academically inspiring hub for researchers, educators, and students in financial mathematics, actuarial science, and statistics. The department is a well-established education centre for financial mathematics and actuarial science at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The department has diversified research areas with a focus on financial mathematics, actuarial science, statistics, and probability. The department also provides PhD degree education in these research areas. ROLE OVERVIEW Reporting to the Dean of the School of Mathematics and Physics, the Head of the Department (HoD) of Financial and Actuarial Mathematics is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and operations of the department, as well as managing the department's staff and resources. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background in at least one of the research areas mentioned above, as well as experience managing teams and developing effective strategies. RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership The HoD provides leadership, academic direction, and organizational management for the department, ensuring effective oversight of its operations and development. The HoD leads the departmental strategic planning process. The departmental strategy is the fundamental guide for the operation and development of the department. The university has a system of rolling three-year plans to identify annual operational objectives and resource planning. It is the responsibility of the HoD to work with the Dean and Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching to ensure that teaching programmes maximise students’ career opportunities in their field of study. Approving leave of absence requests and ensuring adherence to attendance policies. The HoD oversees budget development and expenditure within the department. They are responsible for approving financial expenditures from the departmental budget and ensuring proper financial management. The HoD ensures that quality and standards are upheld in all aspects of the department’s operations, including teaching, research, and administrative processes. The HoD addresses student disciplinary issues and complaints, ensuring fair and transparent processes. The HoD ensures the dissemination of information regarding the development of the University, including changes to policy, university regulations, and issues discussed at university-level meetings. Research The HoD is expected to be research active, attract external research funding, and produce high-quality research output. Teaching and student supervision The HoD is expected to deliver high-quality teaching and student supervision. Your personal sphere of influence: You will join the Department of Environmental Geosciences (EDGE) at the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science (CeMESS) to investigate p phenylenediamine (PPD) tire antioxidants and their quinone transformation products (PPD Qs). The project you will be working on studies tire antioxidant chemicals (PPDs) and their quinone products (PPD‑Qs) released by tire and road wear, and investigates how their properties affect transport across cell membranes, binding to blood proteins, and effects on human cells. The objectives are to measure passive transport and distribution (including plasma protein and membrane lipid binding); to quantify cytotoxicity in human intestinal and lung cell models; and to determine whether the observed effects fit baseline (narcosis) toxicity or reflect specific mechanism. Using a set of PPDs and PPD‑Qs, the work links in vitro effect levels to plausible human exposures and compares current antiozonants with potential replacements. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching, and administration, which means that you will: Plan and execute experiments to quantify passive transport, membrane partitioning, and plasma protein binding for selected PPDs and PPD Qs, ensuring appropriate test conditions and quality control. Generate concentration–response data in intestinal and lung cell models to compare toxicity across ingestion  and inhalation relevant tissues. Perform mechanistic studies to differentiate baseline toxicity from specific mode of toxic action. Analyze how lipophilicity and electrophilicity relate to transport, binding, and cellular outcomes. Manage data analysis and documentation; contribute to manuscripts and presentations. Progress your dissertation; contribute to teaching and administrative tasks; supervise undergraduate/master’s students as appropriate. This is part of your personality: M.Sc. in toxicology, environmental chemistry, environmental sciences, or a related field. Excellent written and spoken English (at least level C1). Laboratory experience. Experience with LC-MS/MS. Ability to perform concentration–response testing and statistical analyses. Familiarity with cell culturing, membrane transport assays, and/or protein binding is an advantage. Strong interest in membrane-molecule interactions and mechanistic toxicology; motivation to link physicochemical properties to biological effects. Applicants should possess (i) a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in health or clinical psychology, or a related discipline, with particular relevance to health risk perception, cognition, and health-related behaviour change; (ii) prior research experience in addressing the psychological, social, and contextual challenges that hinder the adoption and maintenance of healthier lifestyles, such as risk misperception, motivational barriers, inequities, and resistance to behaviour change; (iii) a strong track record of high-quality research as indicated by publication record and external grants; (iv) evidence of international recognition with a demonstrated ability to work across discipline towards new research initiatives; and (v) a strong commitment to teaching students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  The appointees are expected to strengthen and expand the School’s expertise in developing and testing theory-driven, evidence-based approaches to understanding and modifying health-risk behaviours, with a particular focus on translating research into strategies that support healthier decision-making at individual, community, and population levels. They are expected to conduct independent and collaborative scholarly research, publish research articles in high-impact journals, and attract competitive grants to maintain active research programmes; take part in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and supervise research postgraduate students; and perform administrative duties. The appointment rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Research Engineer (Modelling and Simulation) will support a one-year applied research project and evaluate a mobile DC microgrid for military tactical applications. The role involves developing detailed power system models in ETAP and MATLAB/Simulink, conducting performance and reliability simulations, and analysing the behaviour of solar PV, BESS, diesel generators, and DC distribution systems. The engineer will also document modelling assumptions, prepare technical reports, support procurement and project operations, and assist in supervising student researchers. This position is ideal for candidates with strong grounding in power system modelling, microgrid technologies, and simulation-based research. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with the PI, Co-PI, and team to design a robust mobile DC microgrid for military operations. Develop detailed simulation models simulation models in ETAP and MATLAB/Simulink for solar PV arrays, battery energy storage systems (BESS), vehicle-based deployable storage, diesel generator sets and rectifiers, DC distribution bus and electrical loads. Implement and carry out simulation studies to analyse system performance under various operating conditions such as extreme weather, load variation, equipment failure and deployment constraints. Perform load flow, transient stability, reliability, and efficiency studies to evaluate microgrid architecture options. Support the integration of various generation assets into a cohesive DC microgrid model. Document modelling assumptions, system parameters, simulation results, and engineering insights for final reporting. Prepare simulation diagrams, charts, and technical specifications for submission. Assist with procurement of software licences and technical equipment. Conduct Risk Assessments and ensure compliance with WSH regulations. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Work independently and collaboratively to maintain research software and project tools. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related field from a recognised university. Knowledge and experience in modelling and simulation of microgrids or power systems using ETAP and/or MATLAB/Simulink. Experience in distributed energy resources (DERs), PV, BESS, diesel gensets, or DC microgrids is highly advantageous. Familiarity with energy management systems, microgrid control strategies, or predictive/dynamic control will be an advantage. Experience in conducting simulation studies, analysing results, and preparing technical reports. Commitment to supervising student projects and supporting hands-on training activities. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills. Excellent technical writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
