About Silesian University of Technology

The Silesian University of Technology is a public university with three campuses in the Polish province of Silesia. The main campus is in the city of Gliwice.

It was founded in 1945 by professors of the Lwow Polytechnic as a scientific and educational facility for Upper Silesia, the most industrialised area in Poland. At the time, there were 2,750 students across four faculties with almost 200 academic teachers.

Today, there are about 22,000 students across 13 faculties of architecture, electronics and computer science, civil engineering, chemistry, electrical engineering, mining and geology, biomedical engineering, materials engineering and metallurgy, energy and environmental engineering, applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, organisation and management, transport, the College of Social Sciences and Foreign Philologies, and the Institute of Physics. Eleven are situated in Gliwice, two in Katowice and two in Zabrze.

There are almost 60 study programmes and about 200 specialisations. There are around 600 PhD students, 3,400 employees, including 1,750 academic staff and 165 professors.

The Foreign Languages Centre offers language courses during the academic year for conversational Polish, Polish for academic purposes, and a Polish Language Summer School.

Scholarships are available for outstanding non-EU students.

In 2019, the rector of SUT announced six priority research areas, in cancer "omics" and personalised medicine, artificial intelligence and data processing, materials of the future, smart cities and future mobility, process automation and industry, and climate and environmental protection.

Approximately one in 12 chairmen of businesses in Poland graduated from the Silesian University of Technology.
