The Free University of Berlin was founded in 1948, in the turmoil of post-war Germany, when students of the former Universität Unter den Linden, then located in the Soviet sector of the city, were facing persecution because of their views. With international support, the Free University was established, allowing scholars to pursue their teaching and learning without political interference.

Truth, justice and freedom remain the university’s core values with these words imprinted on the university seal.

In the 1960s, the university was the site of several student protests and demonstrations. In 1990, German reunification brought about changes in the management of the university, and, with it, came a newfound focus on research. Today, it is one of only eleven designated ‘German Universities of Excellence’.

Set in the leafy suburb of Dahlem in southwest Berlin, the university is home to more than 32,000 students and offers over 150 degree programmes. It has 17 collaborative research centres, an academic staff of almost 5,000 and partnerships with universities the world over, as well as seven international liaison offices in Beijing, Brussels, Cairo, Moscow, New Delhi, New York, and Sao Paulo.

The university also boasts five Nobel Prize winners among its staff and 17 winners of the Leibniz Prize. With women employed in 30 per cent of its professorships, the university is also at the forefront of German higher education institutions when it comes to gender representation.

Over the years, the Free University of Berlin has hosted many influential figures, including President John F. Kennedy who chose it as the location to deliver his ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ speech in 1963.

About the University As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Role We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Fellow to join an exciting industry-funded applied research project within the Infocomm Technology cluster at SIT. This project addresses the critical challenge of enabling ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) with priority-aware offloading for public safety services. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end investigation of novel edge-assisted computation offloading strategies that leverages edge intelligence. The role will bridge rigorous theoretical work with hands-on offloading algorithm design and development. The core responsibility is to build and validate these offloading strategies, complete with Python application programming interfaces (APIs), through rigorous simulations and proof-of-concept (PoC) trials. This position is ideal for a researcher with a passion for solving complex problems at the intersection of wireless communications, edge computing, and machine learning, and who is eager to translate theoretical insights into practical systems. Key Responsibilities Derive and analyse closed-form mathematical expressions for latency and offloading probabilities across edge-only, cloud-only, and edge-cloud computation offloading algorithms. Design and develop robust Python APIs for edge-only, cloud-only, and edge-cloud computation offloading algorithms. Set up network testbeds integrating hardware, software, and communication protocols to validate edge-only, cloud-only, and edge-cloud computation offloading algorithms. Conduct rigorous simulations and live PoC trials to ensure computation offloading algorithms meets URLLC targets for public safety services. Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI) to ensure all project deliverables are met. Job Requirements A Ph.D./Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Communications Engineering, Computer Science, or a highly related discipline. A strong theoretical foundation and research background in wireless communications and edge computing. Strong publication track record in top-tier conferences and journals in the areas of wireless communications, IoT, or edge computing. Demonstrated proficiency in software API and algorithm development of edge intelligence algorithms using Python. Knowledge of machine learning or reinforcement learning techniques is highly advantageous. Experience with theoretical wireless network modelling, particularly stochastic geometry or queuing theory, is highly advantageous.

The project: RE-SECURE – Remaking Security: Technopolitics in the Global East explores how expertise developed under past political regimes can be renegotiated and adapted for new security purposes. Focusing on Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) as a region marked by profound political transformations from the Cold War to the present, the project rethinks the study of security by theorizing how ways of “doing security” are shaped by history, technology, and global connections. The project examines both the symbolic and material dimensions of remaking security, while combining desk research, archival work, and field research. By analysing how technoscientific practices interact with societal understandings of security risks and global politics, RE-SECURE aims to develop an original, historically grounded, and decentered perspective on security from the perspective of the “Global East.” Your future tasks: The postdoctoral researcher will lead a case study on cybersecurity in Estonia, examining how Cold War cybernetic expertise has been reworked in the context of post-socialist security transformation of Estonia, especially towards the digital statehood, cybersecurity, and cyber-defence politics. The case study research will involve document analysis, field research with scientists, experts, and policymakers, and archival work in Estonia. The postdoc will contribute to the theoretical and methodological research on the project and will collaborate closely with the Principal Invetsigator and PhD student.
