The University Library is a key piece of collection infrastructure for researchers and students. The Collection Access and Discovery functional area of the Library manages acquisitions, access, systems, metadata and digital scholarship. Digital Scholarship services include digitisation of ANU collections, management of the institutional repository Open Research and Data Repository Data Commons, and geographic information system (GIS) services and support. CartoGIS Services is responsible for providing high level advice, guidance and support in the design, development, production and implementation of cartographic and geographic information systems (GIS) research practices across the University for research, education and outreach purposes. CartoGIS Services aims to raise awareness of the application of GIS through the development of a community of scholars in which geospatial analysis and visualisation are used to inform trans-disciplinary research and education.   The GIS Specialist will promote the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology in ANU research by delivering a suite of GIS training modules and working with the Asia Pacific Map Collection. The project The European Research Council project "Cultures of the Cryosphere" (CultCryo) investigates the cultural preconditions and consequences of the use of artificial cooling and freezing technologies in nutrition, health and reproduction, air conditioning, data processing, laboratory research and other everyday practices. This interdisciplinary research project aims to investigate the far-reaching socio-ecological effects of this energy-intensive planetary "cryosphere" and aims to identify possible alternatives for a more sustainable future of dealing with artificial cold. The CultCryo project consists of four international research groups at the Technical University of Darmstadt, the University of Paderborn, the University of Duisburg-Essen, and the Australian National University Canberra, as well as three participating project partners at the University of Hamburg, the University of Halle-Wittenberg and the Institute for Social-Ecological Research Frankfurt. It has an overarching budget of 10 Millon Euros.  Position overview Your tasks In this multi-faceted role, the selected candidate will be expected to conduct multi-sited ethnographic case studies, that will include mapping, across three domains: space cooling, biomedicine and food supply (beef). Additionally, they will contribute as part of the core project group to developing an online atlas on the cryosphere and its corresponding cultural phenomena. The research fellow will also have a key function in co-curating and managing the Cryogenic Cultures Multimedia Archive that acts as a crucial knowledge production and synthesis tool as well as a platform to collectively present our findings. The candidate will also have responsibility for co-advising and supporting the work of the wider CultCryo ethnographic team, as required. Your profile You will have a PhD in anthropology, STS, sociology, history, human geography or related discipline, and significant experience in ethnographic or qualitative social science fieldwork. Our ideal candidate will have experience in multi-sited research and working on interdisciplinary and/or international research projects, and a demonstrated record of publishing in high quality academic journals. The project language is English, thus very good language skills are required. While not mandatory for applying for this position, it will be considered desirable if applicants are willing to familiarise with the German language. We are seeking a highly capable and self-motivated Research Fellow to work on the Experimenting with Estrogen project, funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Project Grant. This project aims to investigate how scientists, clinicians and lay people are experimenting with the hormone estrogen. The Research Fellow will design an independent project that will map lay estrogen knowledge and ‘self-health’ practices through content analysis of websites, apps, social media and educational materials and consider how they engage and challenge scientific and medical accounts of hormonal action, sex and gender, health and wellbeing. This research will be in close conversation with a related interview-based project lead by Prof Mary Lou Rasmussen. Our core aim is to produce detailed and accurate knowledge about lay estrogen-related education and health practices. The fellow will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate course teaching in the School of Sociology and provide supervision to undergraduate research assistants, Honours and Higher Degree by Research students as required. The Person We are seeking an early career researcher to undertake independent research. The research fellow is expected to work with the research team (Professors Celia Roberts, Mary Lou Rasmussen and Helen Keane – all in the School of Sociology at ANU) and will be directly supervised by Professor Rasmussen. The research fellow will develop an independent research program, engage in collaborative research projects, contribute to undergraduate teaching within the School of Sociology, and support the promotion of project activities, including through website development and social media outreach. The Position The position is located at Siding Spring Observatory (SSO), which is one of two key sites for the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) in Australia. The site sits at the summit of Mt Woorut, NSW, and is set within the stunning National Heritage Listed Warrumbungle National Park, around 30 kilometres from the town of Coonabarabran, NSW. The Night Assistant will operate the Anglo-Australian Telescope at night and is responsible for the safety of the Observers present and the safe operation of the telescope itself. The Night Assistant will provide technical support, fault finding and reporting and will assist in the operation of the Instrumentation and other systems such as the automated 2.3m telescope. The role consists of seven night long night shifts, working from sunset to sunrise. Nine such shifts will be scheduled for each twelve months of employment. Accommodation in the ANU Lodge at Siding Spring is provided for each shift if required. There is no requirement for regular daytime attendance at Siding Spring in between the scheduled night shifts. The Person We are looking for a technically sound, IT competent person who follows good WHS practises and is comfortable working at night, either alone and/or closely with observers (remote or in person).
