Criminology and Police Studies

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Criminology with Policing Studies is concerned with the study of crime and deviance, and how they impact upon contemporary policing. Students acquire proficiency in using criminological theories and methods to analyse complex social problems related to policing (e.g. domestic violence, mental health, community policing). They develop a sound understanding of various theoretical perspectives and are trained in the qualitative and quantitative research methods used by criminologists. Specialised modules are delivered by experienced police officers. Students develop a critical knowledge of the relationship between theory and empiricism, and apply methods appropriate to the study of criminology and policing as they initiate, design, plan, and execute research. There is an emphasis on the development of reasoned thought and action, and of transferable critical thinking skills.
