Welcome to the FdA Early Childhood Practice (Early Years Practitioner). This foundation degree has received sector endorsement from the Care Council for Wales to provide a degree which combines an academic qualification with a level 5 vocational qualification. This means that this qualification sits on the ‘Required Qualification List’ which is used by employers to identify employees with relevant qualifications to work in more senior roles (level 5 required roles). Students no longer need to study an academic and vocational qualification separately which will save time and cost. At present sector endorsement applies to students who work in Wales or wish to work in Wales at a future date. This programme is delivered online so you can study in the comfort of your own home with full support from your online tutors. This foundation degree is based in the subject of childhood studies which considers the child and childhood through the combined areas of sociology, education and psychology. At the same time it draws upon the National Occupational Standards for Early Childhood to ensure the content is vocationally relevant. As a foundation degree the programme combines academic study with work-based learning. Work-based learning is a key element of the course as it enables learners to develop their role(s) within the workplace, giving them the opportunity to learn and apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired as an integral element of the taught programme. It will involve the development of higher-level learning within both the institution and the workplace. It will be a two way process, where the learning acquired in the workplace can be applied to the taught programme and the learning from the taught programme taken into the setting. This programme is offered on a full-time basis to recognise the commitment to study both online and within a student’s setting. However, all foundation degrees are designed to enable students to study alongside their working hours. Therefore a student studying a full-time foundation degree will still be able to meet their work commitments.
