Across the UK, the health and social care agenda is a key political issue and there is increasing integration within health and social care fields, which will continue to grow. As a result of this, the sector is seeing the emergence of new and innovative roles that cross traditional career boundaries to ensure seamless and relevant health, wellbeing and social care services. Health and social care related roles within third sector, private and Local Authority provision are increasingly held by people who do not work within ‘traditional’ roles such as nursing or social work but which require understanding of the needs of those within the community, particularly those for example with long term conditions, informal carers and the preventative role of public health initiatives. The programme is also relevant to those already working in the field and who may be seeking supporting theoretical knowledge to ensure that their practice is contemporaneous and evidence based. There are a range of assessments across the programme which ensure that each graduate has a full CV, offering a breadth of skills to potential employers within the sector. Graduates of this programme may also wish to top up to either of the dynamic new degree programmes and exit with a BSc The course is taught on 2 full days per week but students are expected to engage in both directed and independent study outside of these hours. Students will be assigned a personal tutor on enrolment who will support them throughout their time on the programme. The department operates an open door policy, meaning that students do not have to make an appointment in order to be able to access their personal tutor but are welcome to pop in. We also offer an established peer mentor system, so students can access support from fellow learners.
