Biology and Mathematics

This course will equip you with both the analytical problem solving skills of the mathematician and a deep understanding of Biology and its increasing importance in modern society. You will benefit from the formal and rigorous approach of mathematics and from the clear presentation of core biological principles and the ways that these underpin the explosion of new initiatives, largely associated with genomics, which have swept through biology. This will allow a deeper understanding of the rapidly advancing fields of Bioinformatics processes and Systems Biology (typically involving very large data sets) as well as underpinning learning in areas such as quantitative and population genetics, protein structure analysis, enzyme kinetics, biomechanics, measurements of genetic diversity, appropriate statistical packages for the assessment of probability in different biological analyses, and the power of mathematical modelling and meta-analyses.
