Computer Games Technology BSc Hons (Sandwich)

Designed in collaboration with the UK’s top computer games companies, this programme will prepare you for a career in games or game engine development;, scientific software programming; or general software development. The programme – which has been awarded PlayStation® First status – offers the opportunity of a year’s paid sandwich placement in the UK or abroad, where you can gain invaluable experience in the computer games sector. UWS graduates have secured positions as games developers/programmers with companies such as Sony, Rockstar North, Electronic Arts and Codemasters. Others have relocated to the gaming market hotspots of Japan, the US and Canada. The Honours degree is accredited by Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the Audio Visual Industries in the UK and is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS)3 – conditions apply, for full details see our website. Course content The multi-billion dollar games industry requires a highly-skilled workforce and this programme has been awarded PlayStation®First status, an Academic Partnership Programme run by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) and World Wide Studios Europe (SIE WWS-E). PlayStation®First is awarded to select partners providing best practices in PlayStation® production values, research applications and game development skills. Membership of the Sony PlayStation® developer programme also gives you access to PlayStation® professional development kit hardware and software (SDK). Guest speakers from industry also form part of the programme to further deepen your understanding of the subject. Mo McRoberts from the BBC, Alan DonnellSteve Adamson from Morgan Stanley and Nicole Anderson from Smudge Digital have all recently delivered lectures. Year 1 Study includes the hardware and software components of computer games including programming concepts and 2D graphics programming. You will start to build your games portfolio. Year 2 Study includes the design of computer games and the software design principles essential for game engine creation. Skills in physical modelling and how to model underlying physical processes are developed. Year 3 Study includes advanced games programming techniques, and the use of AI (artificial intelligence) techniquesalgorithms. To expand your portfolio you will collaborate with fellow students to complete a computer game running on an engine you have developed. Year 4 (Honours) Studying console development techniques and the application of visualisation techniques, you will undertake a self-chosen major individual project with the option to specialise in an area of interest. Career prospects Many UWS graduates secure positions as games developers/programmers with the sector’s biggest companies including Sony, Rockstar North, Electronic Arts and Codemasters. Others have relocated to the gaming market hotspots of Japan, the US and Canada. Placement/Work-based learning Undertake a year’s paid sandwich placement in the UK or abroad to gain work experience in the computer games sector. Placements can be taken between years 2 and 3 or years 3 and 4. In recent years students have undertaken placements with Morgan Stanley, IES and Codeplay. Professional recognition The Honours degree is accredited by Skillset*, the Sector Skills Council for the Audio Visual Industries in the UK and is also accredited by the British Computer Society^ (BCS). Students wishing to complete Chartered IT Professional registration will require a year of postgraduate study. Students wishing to complete Chartered Engineer registration will require an appropriate accredited Masters degree or appropriate further learning to Masters level.
