Business Technology BSc Hons (Sandwich)

This programme will give you the skills to manage and improve modern business technology. An optional 12-month paid sandwich placement in the UK or abroad is offered while short (8-10 week) placement opportunities are also available. Guest lectures from industry are included in the programme and study abroad opportunities are offered. UWS graduates have found employment with organisations including Oracle, Hewlett Packard, Dell, Aggreko, Lloyds Bank, Clydesdale Bank, Hitachi Solutions Europe and Standard Life. Roles include Project Manager; SharePoint Consultant; Information Security Analyst; Systems Administrator; Business Intelligence Analyst; Data Loss Prevention Analyst; Social Media Consultant; Cloud Projects Engineer; Digital Marketing Manager; and Data Analytics Specialist. The Honours degree is accredited by the British Computer Society1 – conditions apply, for full details see our website. Course content Industry requires graduates who can combine sound business knowledge with technical expertise to manage, maintain and improve modern business technology. You will regularly work with real companies, which will greatly enhance your appeal to future employers. Guest lectures from industry are included in the programme. Ann Davidson from the Scottish Institute for Enterprise recently delivered an enterprise workshop to students. Year 1 You will learn the fundamentals of business operations, computer systems, networks, web development, programming and design. Year 2 You will learn how to analyse, innovate, propose and procure business technology requirements and solutions. You will undertake either a team-based computing project (which may involve direct interaction with a local business) or a short individual placement. Year 3 You will learn about business systems analysis, project management, and recent advancements in areas such as business intelligence and information security management. Sandwich Placement (optional) Between years 2 and 3 or years 3 and 4, you may undertake a placement on a full-time basis over a minimum 36 weeks duration, leading to a sandwich award Year 4 You will conduct an individual research project and study key strategic level aspects of business technology. Career prospects UWS graduates have found employment with organisations including Oracle, Accenture, Hewlett Packard, Honeywell, Diageo, Cigna, Citibank, Dell, Aggreko, Pernod Ricard, North Lanarkshire Council, Lloyds Bank, Clydesdale Bank, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Iomart, BMI Healthcare, Hitachi Solutions Europe, Capgemini and Standard Life. Roles include Project Manager; SharePoint Consultant; Information Security Analyst; Systems Administrator; Business Intelligence Analyst; Data Loss Prevention Analyst; Social Media Consultant; Cloud Projects Engineer; Digital Marketing Manager; and Data Analytics Specialist. Placement/Work-based learning An optional 12-month paid placement in an organisational setting is offered, in the UK or abroad, at the end of year 2 or 3. Short (eight to ten week) placement opportunities are also available during years 2, 3 and 4. In recent years students have completed placements with organisations such as Lenovo, Hewlett Packard and Oxfam. Study abroad You may study abroad while gaining credit towards your degree at one of our 80 educational partner organisations. Professional recognition The Honours degree is accredited by the British Computer Society* as fully meeting the educational requirements for Chartered IT Professional registration. Honours students must complete a year of postgraduate study if they wish to complete Chartered IT Professional registration. Part-time students must gain their award within six years if they wish accreditation.
