Media and Cultural Production

This award offers a focused way to understand the complex and dynamic culture we live in, and the role of the media within it; a wide range of topics including global media industries, audience tastes, the city and modernity, and consumer culture will be explored; students may also undertake production work in digital media, video and photography. This course is unique in its integration of theory and practice in the study of contemporary culture and the transformations brought by digital media. You will develop critical and creative approaches to the study of everyday life and the media within the broader contexts of global culture, technological change, cultural histories, and lived experience. Throughout the course you will engage with the urban and media culture of Bristol through field work, volunteering and work experience. You will make innovative and challenging digital media projects (including photographic, video and web-based work), culminating in a final year exhibition at a major cultural space in Bristol. The course is shaped by the cutting edge writing and media production work of our teaching staff, and our close relationships with innovative partners in the creative and cultural industries in Bristol and the South West. This means the curriculum is always up to date and responsive to current issues and developments.
