Mechanical Engineers play a variety of roles within industry that are essential to the development of a successful national economy. In every field of human endeavour which involves a tangible product, mechanical engineers form an important part of the team. This Mechanical Engineering degree aims to enable you to gain the academic and practical experience which will lead to a successful career as a Chartered Engineer, a career which will often lead to management positions at the highest level of a company and may involve international travel and experience. The degree benefits from the close relationships which the Faculty has built with industry through its part-time degree programmes, applied research and consultancy work. The 1st year provides a basic grounding in the fundamentals of engineering; the 2nd year takes analytical subjects including mathematics into more depth and it is possible to include study of a foreign language. In the final year (BEng) or two years (MEng), there is a significant amount of choice within the course, allowing you to specialise, perhaps with your chosen career in mind. The extra year for MEng students includes study at Master's Level, and a much larger research project. Please note this structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery the same modules will be studied over a longer period and the structure will differ.
