The Criminology aspect of this course centres upon the major theoretical traditions, key debates and methodological issues in criminology and the sociology of crime and deviance to explore a wide range of activities and issues; these include the economic, historical, legal, political and social psychological dimensions of crime and control; the social construction of what counts as crime and deviance is explored through the origins and development of key institutions of law enforcement and criminal justice and the social policy implications and applications of major criminological perspectives; how violence and criminals are constructed and reinforced through social and cultural processes are investigated through competing theoretical nature/nurture perspectives about what makes someone a criminal and how their actions can be accounted for through the various modes of social power like class, gender, ethnicity and the state; through the study of Sociology, students gain not only a thorough knowledge of the discipline, but also a range of transferable skills which are sought by employers, such as analytic and interpretative skills, information and research skills, and communication skills.
