Theatre Production

You will work on a variety of productions, including plays, musicals, concerts, devised projects and events. Uniquely, at Surrey you have the opportunity to collaborate with students from other disciplines within the University’s School of Arts, including Digital Media Arts, Theatre Studies and Dance. The University campus boasts a modern, large and well-equipped theatre in the Ivy Arts Centre. Guildford School of Acting (GSA) also uses many neighbouring theatres and other performance spaces for both teaching and public productions, namely: The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford The Mill Studio, Guildford The Electric Theatre, Guildford Touring venues and site-specific locations Showcase productions in London West End theatres Studies on this intensive course begin with a comprehensive introduction to all core subjects relating to professional production skills. You will receive teaching and build experience in a range of skills, including stage management, sound, lighting, scenic design, construction, costume and digital scenography. You will end your introductory period of study by taking a support role on one or more of GSA’s public productions. In the second year, you will be able to select one dedicated area for specialist development and progress through your Foundation show roles. Additionally, you will take a professional work experience placement, begin your first collaboration with students and staff within another School of Arts or allied department, initiate your Professional Development Planning, and end the year with your Principal show role, allowing you to demonstrate an intermediate level of skill and knowledge in your chosen subject. In your third year of study, you will advance your practical production skills through your Final show roles, taking senior creative or production-critical responsibility across a range of public performances. An industry placement will feature as a further core part of your studies in this year, as will the Professional Development module that is realised in the practical preparation and presentation of your work at an industry showcase event in central London.
