Sport and Exercise Science

As a field, sport and exercise sciences considers the theoretical knowledge and practical application of scientific principles relating to physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, biomechanics and psychology, to maximise sports performance and improve general health and wellbeing through exercise. We have built on the strengths of our well-established programmes in Biochemistry, Biological Sciences and Nutrition, together with those offered within the fields of engineering, human sciences and business, to provide a balanced multidisciplinary Sport and Exercise Science programme that enables students to obtain professional vocational qualifications alongside a degree. Students benefit from Surrey’s state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities based at the £36 million Surrey Sports Park, such as the Surrey Human Performance Institute, strength and conditioning suite and health and fitness Centre, as well as extracurricular opportunities to assist academics and Surrey Sports Park staff with athlete support, patient exercise referral, research project development and delivery, educational workshops and outreach projects. The programme is endorsed by the Register of Exercise Professionals, enabling students to complete Gym Instructor and Personal Training qualifications by undertaking vocational fitness assessments whilst studying for their degree.
