Civil Engineering with Foundation Year - University of Surrey

Having offered degree programmes in civil engineering since the 1960s, the University of Surrey is recognised internationally as providing an excellent balance of academic studies, practical skills and professional experience. Within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering we pride ourselves on the excellent standard of our teaching and research, as we bring together outstanding staff, exceptional students and cutting-edge facilities. Taught by research-active academics in collaboration with industry professionals, our graduates are highly rated when they enter the workplace. Our accredited BEng and Foundation Year programme is designed to give you the knowledge and skills you need for a rewarding career as a chartered civil engineer. You will gain a sound understanding of mathematical, analytical and practical engineering techniques – giving you the foundation for developing safe, sustainable and cost-effective design ideas – along with the management skills needed to bring projects into reality. You will critically review, consolidate and extend your knowledge within the area of civil engineering. You will also develop specialised skills, evaluate new concepts, and apply your diagnostic and creative skills. You will study in exceptional facilities which include purpose-built soil mechanics and geology laboratories, excellent materials and structural testing facilities, up-to-date computing suites and award-winning environmental health laboratories. This course has been accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT). We’re always looking to make it easier to access the education we offer, so we have launched the option of taking a degree with a foundation year. A foundation year is an extra year of study at the start of your course that leads in to a full degree programme. It’s a great option if: • You don’t have the grades for a full degree course • You have non-traditional qualifications or experience • You’re starting university after some time away from education • You’re looking for more support during the transition into university study. During a foundation year you’ll learn about your chosen subject, develop your study skills and get used to university life. On successful completion of your foundation year, you’ll be ready to progress to the first year of your degree course. As a foundation year student, you’ll be a full student of the University and part of our community. You’ll have access to all our campus facilities and support.
