Speech & Language Sciences

Language is everywhere… it is fundamental to almost everything we do and who we are. When someone has a language disorder, their quality of life is impacted in ways that are very difficult to imagine. We use language not only to pass on information, but also to form social bonds, to influence people, to negotiate, make people feel good, and of course for fun. A career in Language Therapy, or language special needs in Education In a wider perspective, if you are interested in people and how they tick, then this could be the perfect degree for you. We look at questions like: What is language and what does it look like and how does it work? How do children learn it and how can we teach it? What happens when it goes wrong and how can we ‘fix’ it? How and why do languages and accents vary and change so much? What do we do with it? How do we achieve our goals using language? What does language tell us about human psychology, society and culture? This course offers full or part-time options, with placements in a wide range of schools and healthcare settings.
