Physics with Astronomy (4 years)

Physics and astronomy are dynamic subjects, which are continually being developed by new discoveries and innovations. You will be taught by research-active physicists who have an outstanding international reputation in their research areas. This programme has two variants: Our MPhys Physics with Astronomy will build upon the MPhys Physics programme and give you a more advanced understanding of high-energy astronomy and the study of compact objects. Our variant MPhys Physics with Astronomy with a Year Abroad flagship programme provides a unique opportunity for students to relocate to the USA in their final year to work on a research project at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Boston, USA. Whichever variant of the programme you study, in the second year, our top students have the opportunity to visit Tenerife, Spain, for a two-week period of astronomical observation at the Izana Observatory. The University of Southampton is a great choice for physics students. The Guardian University Guide (2017) ranks physics and astronomy at Southampton as fourth in the UK, and we’re first within the Russell Group for student satisfaction (NSS 2017). Our MPhys Physics is accredited by the Institute of Physics. Plus, you’ll have access to exceptional research-grade facilities, including rooftop observatories and specialist photonics labs. There are many career options for our students, including high-tech industry, computer science, medical physics, scientific journalism, patent law, management and finance, and teaching. Many of our students go on to postgraduate study.
