Philosophy and Music with Year Abroad

A Philosophy and Music degree at Southampton provides you with an excellent and rigorous education exploring fundamental and far-reaching issues, while developing advanced skills in musical performance, composition, and analysis. Your time here will be rich, stimulating and enjoyable, and you will graduate as an independently-minded, confident individual with the skills required for a successful career. The year abroad will allow you to experience an entirely new culture and to learn or develop another language. The deep connections between philosophy and music go back to the Ancient Greeks. This programme draws on Southampton's research strengths in musicology, aesthetics and philosophy of music in particular. The year abroad will give you the opportunity to study for an additional academic year at a partner university in another part of the world. Destinations include Europe, Asia and North America. We are first in the Russell Group for overall student satisfaction (NSS 2016), and ranked eighth in the UK according to The Guardian University Guide 2016. We offer a high number of contact hours with teaching conducted in small groups. Our research-led teaching is delivered by recognised world experts on contemporary philosophy and the history of the subject, and we achieved the seventh highest score in the UK for published work (REF 2014). We also offer many opportunities to take modules outside your main degree subjects and to study abroad.
