German and History (4 years)

Our BA German and History will allow you to pursue a wide array of historical interests while studying the most widely spoken native language in Europe. Knowledge of German will give you the edge as a budding historian as it offers access to an expansive German-speaking scholarly literature and primary sources relevant to European and international history. History explores a rich array of past cultures – ancient, medieval and modern. It sharpens your insight into how societies functioned in the past, encouraging a more critical awareness of the problems of the present. Modern Languages provides a lively and well-equipped academic environment, which focuses on linguistic training and the study of contemporary European culture. Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is consistently ranked in the top five in the UK by The Guardian University Guide and we are ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research. Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research. Southampton is ranked in the top three history departments for research, meaning our students learn from world-leading researchers (REF, 2014).We offer extremely flexible degree programmes, with a rare breadth of topics not commonly taught in British universities.
