Philosophy

Philosophy at Sheffield gives you complete freedom. There are no compulsory modules so you can pretty much design your own curriculum. This approach works because every student has a personal adviser to guide them and because of the unusually wide range of subjects on offer. We cover all the key areas, including ethics, metaphysics, and political philosophy. We also teach courses on major figures such as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes and Hegel. Sheffield is particularly good at making philosophy relevant. We run sessions on careers, so you’re absolutely clear what your skills are and how they can be an asset to an employer. You will also get the chance to work in the community through projects like Philosophy in the City, which introduces school children to philosophical ideas they can apply to everyday life. The course produces graduates who think clearly and precisely. They’re articulate, creative communicators who know how to structure an argument, and how to analyse one. They are also excellent listeners. They work in teaching, law, social work, journalism, the civil service, charities and business.
