French at Sheffield gives you flexibility and choice. A long list of optional modules means you’re free to follow your own path. Learning the language is compulsory, of course. We want you to develop your written and spoken French to a very high standard. Our School is in the top 10 in the Russell Group for its research impact. We teach in English and French. Our language classes are led by native speakers. We keep the groups small, so everyone gets the level of tutoring they need. You’ll spend roughly thirty per cent of your time in the School of East Asian Studies studying the language and culture of Japan. You will spend your third year studying at a university in France or Canada or at the renowned Institut d’Études Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris. Choosing a degree like this one is often the first step towards a richer intellectual and cultural life. A second language, and experience of living and studying in another culture are big advantages in the jobs market, particularly if you want an international career. Our graduates go into advertising, the media, translating, interpreting, business, law, charity and social work.
