If you’re a musician who loves the arts in general, this combination of subjects gives you the freedom to follow your passions and see where they lead. A long list of optional modules gives you plenty of scope to create the kind of course you want. Options in the School of English include creative writing, theatre and film studies. Music modules cover everything from musicology to composition and performance. The School of English and the Department of Music are part of the city’s cultural life. Our students are involved in theatre projects, literary festivals, and a year-round programme of live music. The Department of Music, where you will spend roughly half your time, teaches most genres, including classical, pop, jazz, folk and world music. Graduates tend to be good thinkers, good readers and good writers. They’re creative, self-motivating. They have an eye for detail and an ear for nuance. Their particular blend of transferable skills means they’re right at home in TV, radio, marketing, publishing and PR. Many of our music graduates go into the music business as performers and technicians and in organisational roles.
