Sheffield is one of only a few universities in the north of England with a stand-alone economics department. Our staff are internationally respected. They advise UK government departments and international organisations such as the World Bank. So the department is large enough to cover a lot of specialist topics, which means more choice for you. We also offer the option of a year-long work placement with a relevant organisation. The Department of Philosophy, where you will spend roughly half your time, is a supportive environment with a real community feel. You will get a personal adviser – a member of staff who guides you through your studies. You also have the option of a student mentor during the first year. There are no compulsory modules in philosophy so you get to create your own timetable from a long list of options. Some of our graduates become professional economists. Others go into related professions such as banking, insurance and accounting. Some work for organisations such as Deloitte, Nestle, Rolls-Royce, the Office of Budget Responsibility and the Houses of Parliament.
