Tourism is now one of the largest industries in the world and educating responsible managers is a key focus of our tourism courses. Tourism development in harmony with the environment is a core theme. This course will allow you to gain an appreciation of theory alongside the practical skills needed to be an international tourism manager and prepare you for a variety of employment opportunities in major areas of business. You will also gain an understanding of the impacts of current international initiatives around tourism leadership and innovation. You will be given the opportunity to study overseas on European Union-funded modules such as Destination Analysis, Rural Tourism and International Conference Tourism as two week intensive programmes. There are also opportunities for international exchanges with our global partner institutions in Europe, the US and the rest of the world through our Study Abroad programme. The Professional Development module in the second year helps you to develop the skills you need – presentation skills, networking, interview techniques etc – to move more easily into successful employment. By your final year you will be able to analyse tourism systems and make recommendations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operations in respect of stakeholders including consumers, employees, shareholders and the government. You can enhance your career options with a year-long industrial placement giving you the opportunity to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding you have gained in the first two years of the course. You will work with an employer either in the UK or overseas; this could be a local, national or international organisation. In 2016-17 these included such as Crowne Plaza hotels and ThinkMoney Group. During this year, you will not pay fees to the University and will earn a wage for the work that you do. There are different entry requirements and course codes for the Professional Experience Year option. This degree is also offered with a Foundation Year.
