Italian and Spanish

This course seeks to develop student’ intellectual potential, enabling them to embark on a wide range of careers or progress to postgraduate study, while also promoting a lifelong interest in learning. Its multi-disciplinary approach aims to produce graduate who are competent communicators in Italian and Spanish, who are well-informed about Italian and Spanish/Latin –American literature, culture, history and current affairs, and who have acquired skills that will be of use outside the confines of the discipline. **Why study this course?** A more connected world demands language skills. Expand your horizons and immerse yourself in the history and cultures of the Italian-and Spanish-speaking worlds. Through this course you will master the fundamental elements of the Italian language and can expect to become confident and highly skilled in written and spoken Italian. You will learn both languages in the political, social and cultural contexts of the countries in which they are spoken; this considerably enhances your understanding of the languages and also provides you with the knowledge to live and work in these countries. In Italian, you will have the opportunity to study with leading academics on topics ranging from Dante, Machiavelli and Michelangelo to fascism, the history of the language, the resistance, Fellini and contemporary culture. In Spanish, you can study a wide range of optional modules in Spanish and Latin American culture, history, literature, politics and film with staff who are internationally-recognised experts. Our small language classes, led by native speakers, and direct access to expert staff for help and feedback ensures you develop your language skills to the best of your ability. **After the course** By the time you graduate, you can expect to be able to write and speak fluently in Spanish and Italian - an immensely useful skill to have given that there is currently a great shortage of well-qualified linguists in the UK. A study by the British Council in 2013 identified Spanish as the most important language for the UK's future and, therefore, is likely to greatly boost your employment prospects in an increasingly global workplace. The course provides you with numerous transferable skills in research, analysis, presenting and group working and the experience of studying or working abroad also distinguishes you from non-language graduates, providing evidence of self-reliance, adaptability and enterprise. Our graduates have an excellent record of gaining employment or progressing to further study and have found careers in many different sectors, including education, publishing, translation, EU institutions, finance, fashion, entertainment, the film business and tourism, both in the UK and abroad. Employers of our graduates have included companies and organisations such as the Ministry of Defence, Energis Communication, BNP Paribas, the Taylorian Institution Library and Riso Scotti SRL, Christie’s, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, PGL Travel Ltd.
