French and Spanish - University of Reading

Expand your horizons and become highly skilled y in two languages by immersing yourself in the history and cultures of the French- and Spanish-speaking worlds. Join our friendly and dynamic Department of Modern Languages and European Studies and study in a lively, multilingual community with staff and students from all over the world. You will master the fundamental elements of each language, to the point where you will graduate with a near-native command of both. Our small language classes, led by native speakers, and direct access to expert staff ensures you develop your language skills to the best of your ability. 98% of our research overall in modern languages and linguistics is rated as world leading, internationally excellent or internationally recognised (Research Excellence Framework, 2014), which feeds directly into your learning. You will learn each language in the political, social and cultural contexts of the countries in which they are spoken. This considerably enhances your understanding of the languages and also provides you with the knowledge to live and work in these countries. In French, you will have the opportunity to study a wide range of optional modules in French and francophone culture, history, literature, theatre, politics and film with staff who are internationally-recognised experts in French-speaking literature, history and culture. In Spanish, you can study a range of optional modules in Spanish and Latin American culture, history, literature, politics and film with staff who are internationally-recognised experts. You will also be able to explore a specific topic in both of the languages you're learning through comparative modules. If you really enjoy studying cinema, for example, then you can opt to take modules in European and world cinema and gain an even broader knowledge of the medium. Choose to study or work abroad during your third year and immerse yourself in the country's culture and language. You will split your time equally between French- and Spanish-speaking countries (six months in each), studying at a university or working on a placement. A key advantage of this course is that you can incorporate both study and placement work into the year abroad for a more varied experience. Core language modules in the second year will prepare you for studying abroad, equipping you with the skills and knowledge required to work and live in a different culture. We provide accelerated learning in Spanish and French, meaning that you can start both languages from beginner's level if you have not studied them before. Regardless of the level you join at, all students achieve the same standard of written and spoken Spanish and French by the final year. **Careers** Being able to write and speak confidently in French and Spanish, as well as your in-depth knowledge of the countries in which these languages are used, will make you highly attractive to a wide range of employers. 98% of graduates from the Department of Modern Languages and European Studies are in work or further study six months after graduating (DLHE survey, 2015-16). A recent study by the British Council identified Spanish as the most important language for the UK's future and, therefore, is likely to greatly boost your employment prospects in an increasingly global workplace. The course provides you with numerous transferable skills in research, analysis, presenting and group working. Our graduates have an excellent record of gaining employment or progressing to further study. Recent graduates have gone on to careers ranging from translating, teaching and research (doctorates at Oxford and Queen Mary, University of London) to financial services (HSBC, Zurich Insurance), telecommunications (Vodafone), marketing, the fashion industry (Chanel), the international art business (Christie’s) regional development (the Design Wales Project).
