Ancient History and History - University of Reading

Journey through your favourite historical periods, from ancient Greece through Medieval Europe to Cold War Britain. This course enables you to study the classical world alongside modern history. Ancient History gives you an understanding of the cultures and societies of the Greek and Roman worlds, a period spanning from 2000 BC to around 600 AD, while modern history focuses on the era from the Crusades to the 1960s. Learn about the ancient Greek and Roman worlds from 2000BC to around 600AD. These worlds cover parts of modern Africa, Asia and Europe. Discover them in their political, literary, social, culture and religious contexts. Address important modern questions and trace them back to their roots, exploring different periods of ancient history through both literary and material sources. Enhance your knowledge of the ancient world through optional Latin and Greek language modules, or deepen your understanding through hands-on experience with artefacts from the Ure Museum. You can also discover ancient Egyptian and Anatolian civilisation, work on digital reconstructions and design your own assignments and projects. Explore the last thousand years. History explores the past and what it means to be human. Examine different historical periods before pursing your own interests later in the course. Our experts will take you on a journey through Britain, Europe, Russia, Africa, America, the Middle East and South Asia over the last thousand years. Learn about a diverse range of societies, cultures and individuals while developing the skills and approaches desirable in a wide range of careers. Our degrees are highly flexible. Immerse yourself in modules covering subjects such as magic, witchcraft and heresy, fascism and communism, gender and culture, and politics and colonialism. We take an individual approach to our students' learning, which is reflected in our 90% satisfaction score for the teaching on our courses in the National Student Survey 2017. Choose one of the History Department's popular employability modules and gain useful transferable skills and work experience. The University also offers all students the chance learn a modern language alongside their core subjects. Apply for our annual travel bursary to undertake independent study-related travel and gain experience of ancient sites. Or study at the British School at Athens and the British School at Rome, which both offer summer school opportunities. Both the Ancient History and History Departments benefit from a dedicated placements officer to help with CV writing and letters of application. History's "Discovering archives" module is ideal if you are interested in a career in libraries or archives, while "Going public" provides an insight into heritage and museum work. The University's museums also provide a number of voluntary placements. Choose to study abroad for part of your degree through our Erasmus+ programme, to gain first-hand experience of life in another culture. **Careers** A degree in Ancient History and History will provide you with a range of transferable skills. Historians have to analyse a wide variety of sources to produce reasoned conclusions, and this helps develop clear thinking, written and oral communication skills, time management, adaptability, independence, and the ability to understand different cultures. Choose to study abroad and you will develop further desirable skills such as independence, knowledge of different cultures, international communication skills and adaptability. Previous graduates have gone on to a wide variety of careers, including work in accountancy and banking, heritage and museums, teaching and media research and production. Past employers include GCHQ, The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the University of Oxford and Sotheby's.
