There is also an opportunity to study abroad through the ERASMUS programme. WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? This degree is for those wanting a three-year course with the option of an additional sandwich year in employment, in order to develop as a highly capable and employable physicist. An enthusiasm for understanding how fundamental physical theories can be harnessed to develop new materials and applications is essential. You should also be keen to develop strong mathematical, computational and instrumentation skills that will enable you to add value in research or employment. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE GAINED This degree has been designed to embed the development of employability skills with employer contributions in curriculum delivery. The University of Portsmouth is a member of The South East Physics Network and you may undertake paid summer placements in industry or research. Opportunities to carry out major project work in the final year in well equipped labs, with possible industry supervision, ensure our graduates are highly attractive in modern industry or commerce. AFTER THE COURSE You may expect to go on to research through higher degrees or to be employed in positions requiring well-developed mathematical, analytical and problem solving skills. The skills the degree engenders are in high demand across a wide range of employment types from financial modelling and aerospace development to climate change modelling. For example, students have gone on to success at postgraduate level, in the National Medical Physics training scheme and in graduate training schemes provided by companies such as BAE systems.
