This Law degree provides a stimulating and broad-based course for those wishing to develop a greater understanding and critical awareness of the wider social, economic and political issues relating to criminal justice. WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? By studying the two subjects of law and criminology you'll have the opportunity to keep your career options open - particularly if you wish to pursue a legal career specialising in criminal justice. You'll have plenty of practical experience while studying with opportunities from full blown unscripted mock trials involving law, criminology, drama and forensic students from across the University to working in our General Legal Advice Clinic or Small Claims Clinic providing advice to local residents under the supervision from experienced solicitors. You also have the opportunity to work with one of our external partners and currently students are working at Portsmouth Mediation Service, Hampshire Fire and Rescue, British Red Cross, two firms of local solicitors and Citizens Advice Portsmouth all, under supervision, advising clients MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE The course is accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board. Which means graduates can progress to the Bar Professional Training Course or the Legal Practice Course – the traditional routes to becoming a barrister or a solicitor. If you're interested in law but also want to gain an understanding about why people break the law then this course is for you. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE GAINED You have the option of taking the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) papers in your final year, which gives you the opportunity to obtain its Graduate Fast Track Diploma together with your qualifying law degree. After graduating this will enable you to apply for work as a legal executive or paralegal. We strongly recommend you spend your third year on a placement in industry which could be in a law firm or in a criminal justice environment - this will enhance your employability and give you a real flavour for the type of career you wish to undertake after graduation.
