Our Geology course is accredited by the Geological Society of London and places great emphasis on practical learning and developing the skills for employment as a professional geologist. You will learn in a friendly and supportive environment with a structured tutorial programme across all three years, excellent fieldwork opportunities, student-led extra-curricular activities, refurbished and re-equipped teaching facilities, and strong links with industry. Your studies will be supported by field trips to give you real hands-on experience. Field work to the Bristol Channel, Isle of Wight, Scotland and Dorset will help you in the basics of field geology in your first year whilst a 9 day field trip to France and your second year will help you develop advanced techniques. Your third year includes a 9 day field course to the world-class geology of Cyprus. MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE The course covers all aspects of geology. In your first year you start with a general introduction to geology (no prior knowledge assumed), covering formation of minerals and different rock types, geological mapwork, and evolution of the Earth and fossils. We have excellent facilities including a brand-new laboratory and new microscopes. WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? This degree is for those wanting a three year course and to go on to a wide range of geological jobs. The course assumes no prior knowledge of geology, but a passion and curiosity for understanding how the Earth works is essential. Students must be keen to develop the strong practical and scientific skills that will enable them to add value in employment. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE GAINED Through our mixture of practical and classroom-based work, you will develop important problem-solving, communication and IT skills. Field and laboratory work will help you develop teamwork and leadership. You will also plan and organise your own final year independent project that will involve considerations of health and safety, ethics and resource management. Acquisition of all these transferable skills and knowledge will make you an excellent candidate for a wide range of careers. AFTER THE COURSE Recent graduates have gone on to work in the extractive minerals industry and mining, oil and gas sectors, geological engineering, teaching, and further study at masters and PhD levels.
