Develop highly regarded knowledge and skills in the foundations and applications of physics across a wide range of areas, from health physics to particle physics. WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? This degree continues to be developed in collaboration with industry through the Portsmouth Physics Industry Advisory Board. It is recognised by the Institute of Physics. Course development was supported by the National HESTEM programme. MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE This degree is taught by world-leading physics researchers and uses new laboratories with advanced equipment, ensuring you gain valuable skills that will make you highly employable in the rapidly developing advanced quantum and materials technologies economy. WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? This degree is for those wanting a three-year course with the option of a fourth sandwich year in employment. An enthusiasm for understanding how fundamental physical theories can be harnessed to develop new materials and applications is essential. You should also be keen to develop strong mathematical and instrumentation skills that will enable you to add value in research or employment. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE GAINED This degree has been designed to embed the development of employability skills with employer contributions in curriculum delivery. Portsmouth is a member of The South East Physics Network and you can undertake paid summer placements in industry or research. Opportunities are available to carry out major project work in the final year in well equipped labs, with possible industry supervision. AFTER THE COURSE You can expect to go on to research through higher degrees or to be employed in positions requiring well-developed mathematical, analytical and problem solving skills. The skills the degree engenders are in high demand across a range of employment types from financial modelling and aerospace development to climate change modelling. Past students have gone on to success at postgraduate level, in the National Medical Physics training scheme and in graduate training schemes provided by companies such as BAE systems.
