Russian and Portuguese

Provides a broad grounding in Russian language, culture and society as well as a strong grounding in Portuguese language, students will also develop a sophisticated understanding of topics affecting Portuguese speaking populations across the world. **Russian** - Studies in Russian will enable students to develop their Russian language skills to a superior level and simultaneously to develop their interests in and knowledge of a variety of other subject areas (such as film and media studies, sociology, history and politics, literary and cultural studies). **Portuguese** - The course gives students a thorough grounding in the languages and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world. - Students study both European and Brazilian Portuguese. - They also explore a range of options in areas such as contemporary culture, colonialism, literature and cinema from Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique and Angola. **Both Languages** Year 3 is spent split between Russian- and Portuguese-speaking countries (on university exchange, work placement, or teaching as an English-language assistant). **Special Features** **Russian** - Language courses are team-taught by native speakers of Russian and English-speakers with a superior command of Russian; these courses are supplemented by structured independent language-learning activities. - There are separate language pathways for beginners and post-A level students in the first two years of study. - You will have access to a wide range of Russian cultural and social events that further your study of Russian language and culture outside the classroom. **Portuguese** - You will be taught by both Portuguese and Brazilian language teachers with specific training and as a result, both your written and your oral work are enhanced by constant exposure to accurate, idiomatic, and documented language. - Cultural content courses are led by academic staff with broad expertise and who publish widely in their field. - There are outstanding resources for students, including world leading collections on Lusophone Africa within the library, and access to hundreds of films and texts on Portugal and Brazil.
