Italian and Chinese

Provides students with a detailed knowledge of the language and culture of Italy from the medieval period to the present day as well as a firm grounding in Mandarin Chinese and contemporary Chinese culture, society, economy and politics along with China's changing relations with the West. Italian Students develop detailed knowledge of the language and culture of Italy from the medieval period to the present day. The range of units offered across all years of the programme combine the study of history, politics, literary, linguistic and visual culture of the peninsula and are taught by specialists in the fields. We offer a linguistics pathway through the programme for those interested in the history of the Italian language and its dialects. Assessment comprises methods including essays, commentaries, presentations and exams. Language courses, taught by native speakers, involve comprehension, translation, grammar and oral work. Part of the third year is spent abroad in Italy. Students can choose to complete work placements, teach English in schools through the British Council assistantship scheme, or take advantage of our variety of Erasmus exchanges, which include: Bergamo, Bologna, Cagliari, Ferrara, Macerata, Naples, Palermo, Perugia and Siena. Chinese Students study Mandarin Chinese throughout the course. The core language teaching in Mandarin Chinese enables you to develop various linguistic skills: speaking and writing accurately; understanding and analysing audio, video and written material; using different registers; speaking to a group with confidence; and translating with appropriate sensitivity. At the same time, students can choose China-related topics in literature, film, cultural studies, politics, history, linguistics, economics, development studies and business, drawing on the range of research expertise in Chinese Studies. In this way, you are able to tailor the course in keeping with the development of your interests.
