Medical Biosciences (Microbiology) - University of Leicester

Infectious diseases are responsible for a third of all deaths and are a major cause of death in infants and young children. The sheer diversity of pathogens and the exotic mechanisms they have evolved to escape the human immune system make them a fascinating topic to study. The MBiolSci in Medical Biosciences (Microbiology) will give you a thorough understanding of the range, type, structure and physiology of infectious organisms that cause disease in humans, including the major microbial diseases. By studying microbiology in the context of the molecular and cellular mechanisms used to cause and prevent disease, you’ll learn how infectious diseases are caused, prevented, managed and cured – in both research and clinical environments. Along the way, you will gain subject-specific knowledge while developing your analytical skills and gaining experience in handling complex information. You will also gain a broad understanding of fundamental biological processes. By studying microbiology in the context of medicine, disease and health, you will be able to apply your knowledge across many sub-disciplines and gain a valuable and powerful asset in scientific environments and in many other walks of life.
