French and Portuguese are major European languages, also spoken in diverse countries around the world. This degree gives you the chance to build on your existing French skills while learning Portuguese from scratch – and you’ll develop your understanding of the cultures in which they are spoken. Core modules will allow you to build your language skills, but you’ll also choose from an array of optional modules exploring literature, cinema, history, philosophy and socio-political issues. You could study medieval French romance, African and Caribbean culture in French, Latin American cinema or Portuguese literature. You could even try another language or develop practical skills like translating. We can offer such flexible degrees because the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies is large and diverse. At time of writing more students are studying Portuguese at degree level at Leeds than any other UK university and we even have the Portuguese government’s Camoes Institute on campus.
