Europe is not just a geographical space – it’s a cultural, political and social entity. European Studies allows you to adopt a range of approaches from different disciplines to deepen your understanding of this complex region. Core and optional modules will give you a good understanding of political ideas and the institutions and political systems that make up modern Europe, as well as specialist knowledge of topics that interest you, such as development or the rise of extreme right parties. This degree will allow you to learn Portuguese from beginners’ level and gain an insight into Lusophone and Latin American history and culture. By combining core and optional modules, you’ll build language skills and explore topics from literature and cinema to national identity and the African Diaspora. You’ll also benefit from the Instituto Camões – the cultural institute of the Portuguese government is on campus and you’ll have access to all of its facilities.
