Sport Management with a Year in Industry - University of Kent

The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences provides a first-rate experience for students in an innovative and fast-growing department. This course aims to provide a learning environment that prepares students for a career within the sports industry. By undertaking this programme, you benefit form a collaboration with the Kent Business School allowing you to take a range of different modules tailoring your studies around your interests as well as hands on experience taking a year to work in industry. We encourage a range of teaching methods for student learning, including traditional lectures and more student-centred approaches, such as problem-based learning scenarios, case-studies and real-life applications of learning. On this programme there is an emphasis on building up practical experience. There is a wide range of opportunities for applied learning in leisure and fitness centres, voluntary sport organisations as well as at sports events and in sports development. In your first year, you take a series of introductory modules on the sports industries, sport and exercise psychology, and management principles. You choose optional modules from a range of sport-related or business modules. In your second year and final years, you study leadership in sport as well as marketing and promotion, and select further modules depending on your particular interests to specialise your degree to either a sport or business focus. You can choose modules that cover topics in personal training, corrective exercise, and applied nutrition or on contemporary business issues and enterprise and entrepreneurship in the sports industry. You spend a year working on an industry placement between your second and final year – we can give advice and guidance regarding this. Spending a year in industry gives you invaluable workplace experience, which greatly enhances your employment prospects and also helps you in your final year at university, allowing you to apply your academic learning into a real-world context. The course aims to equip students with well-rounded employability skills and business acumen to apply in a wide range of situations and environments and is perfect for students with an interest in both business management and sport. Lecturers on the BA Sport Management programme are involved in some of the latest sport management and policy research developments and work with prominent sport teams and bodies such as Sport England, ENGSO, Kent FA, London 2012 and Rio 2016, Badminton Europe, RFU, British Cycling, Real Madrid, EIS, and UK Sport.
