Did you know that more than one billion people take an international trip every year? And that number is increasing. It’s no wonder that tourism is one of the biggest industries there is! Our course can give you the chance to gain the knowledge and skills to work in this fascinating and rewarding sector. All of us look forward to our travels but we don’t often think about what goes on behind the scenes, the processes, systems and activities that mean we are able to travel and to enjoy ourselves while we’re away from home. This course will give you an introduction to the tourism sector that could stand you in good stead when you go on to a career in the industry. We’ll look at the issues affecting tour operators, travel agencies, online retailers, accommodation providers, visitor attractions and tourist boards. During the course you’ll have the chance to learn the fundamentals of successful business through the lens of tourism. You will develop your skills through a combination of research, practical experience and shared academic and industry knowledge. We’ll start by looking at business-related skills before applying them to all areas of the travel and tourism sector. In your second year we’ll look at marketing and human resource management in more detail. You’ll have the chance to apply the principles you’ve learnt if you go on a placement in your third year. Previous students have taken placements with Greenwich Country Club (Connecticut), Sandals (Antigua), Ovolo Group (Hong Kong), PMG Asia (Singapore), Leger Holidays, Golf Breaks, Country Club of Darien (USA), White Lodgings (USA) and Intercontinental Hotel (Bangkok). In your final year you’ll take a more strategic approach and deal with issues related to sustainability. While you study you’ll have the chance to specialise in languages, air or land passenger transport as your interests develop.
