Exciting developments in textiles and fabrics are opening up a world of possibilities. Textile Practice (Surface Design) BA/BSc(Hons) gives you the chance to explore the potential, as well as new materials and surfaces, thanks to innovative textile-based thinking. The course aims to get you thinking creatively and looking into the possibilities that textiles and surface design open up. We’ll look at how digital design, embroidery/stitching or printing/dying could be applied to a range of surfaces, and you will also have the opportunity to try out knitting, weaving and future materials too. This should help you understand how to develop your practical approaches suitably for the interiors or fashion industry. You’ll have the chance to work on projects with businesses in the industry, not to mention design innovators too. And perhaps even exhibit your products at a key industry tradeshow. We’ll also give you the opportunity to go on field trips to trade shows and exhibitions so you can see the latest thinking and techniques. While you get a feel for the practical side of things we’ll aim to develop some key skills that will be useful for lots of careers. Like your visual communication skills and conceptual thinking. It’s all focused on equipping you with the knowledge and abilities that will help you stand out as a future designer-maker or commercial designer in the industry. The course is accredited by the Textile Institute, a worldwide organisation for textiles, clothing and footwear. At the end of your studies, you will have had the opportunity to built your personal vision alongside research, innovative thinking and practical skills and know how to push the boundaries of your ideas. Textile Practice (Surface Design) BA/BSc(Hons) is part of a suite of three courses that includes Textile Practice (Textile Design) BA/BSc(Hons) and Textile Practice (Textile Crafts and Art) BA/BSc(Hons). Once you’ve enrolled on one of the courses, you’re free to switch to another during the final year (with the agreement of your tutors) if your interests change. You only have to apply for one course within the suite we offer.
