Philosophy is a fascinating subject which explores and challenges the concepts and assumptions which frame the way we think, speak and act. It examines topics like how we should live and treat others, and concepts such as human nature, knowledge, truth and freewill. All of our Philosophy teaching staff also carry out research. Philosophy achieved excellent results in the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), with 19% of our research being judged 4 star ('world-leading') and a further 47% of it being judged 3 star ('internationally excellent'). All staff in Philosophy were submitted for this exercise. We are proud to be a strong, vibrant department dedicated to not only teaching you about Philosophy, but also teaching you to do Philosophy and enjoy where it takes you. Our unique Humanities Programme at the University of Hertfordshire enables you to study a combination of major and minor subjects to create a really bespoke degree that suits both your strengths and interests. It’s up to you whether you continue with your unique combination from your second year of study or simply specialise in perhaps just one or two subject areas.
