Studying history helps us understand how our past has shaped our present – the political and economic institutions, cultures, societies and ideas of our own country and others across the world. It's not just about learning what happened – but how and why it happened, and why history matters to us. Our students in the School of History take a variety of modules in British, European and world history from 1500 to the present day. We also offer modules in public history. Through workshops, lectures, seminars, one-to-one discussions with your tutor and visits to historical sites, you'll study a wide range of historical debates and sources. A language can be studied from three different entry points: complete beginners, students who already have a GCSE or students who have an AS or A2 qualification. Our unique Humanities Programme at the University of Hertfordshire enables you to study a combination of major and minor subjects to create a really bespoke degree that suits both your strengths and interests. It’s up to you whether you continue with your unique combination from your second year of study or simply specialise in perhaps just one or two subject areas.
