This is a career-oriented programme that will allow you to gain a strong foundation in key areas of molecular biological sciences and develop a wide range of scientific skills to prepare you for employment or for further study. If you have the ability but not the qualifications, an extended degree is the first step to graduation. This four-year programme is identical to the three-year degree, but includes a foundation year, and has a lower entry tariff. Foundation year The foundation year is designed to give you: A thorough introduction to chemistry and to biology A thorough introduction to biochemistry and to pharmacology Fundamentals of energy, life and resources An understanding of how to measure change Essential skills for science Improved mathematics Laboratory practice. Employability The programme has a strong emphasis on hands-on practical work in both your teaching and learning, and in the assessments. In addition, there is a student-led project in the final year. You can study this programme with a sandwich year in industry. You should apply for this programme if you are interested in basic research and development, teaching, or in working in hospital laboratories, multidisciplinary biological environments, the scientific civil service or scientific journalism. A significant proportion of our graduates pursue further study towards masters and PhD level degrees and careers in research. The aims of the programme are: To provide students with a knowledge of molecular biology and genetics, biochemistry, and medical sciences as well as the practical applications of the biological sciences To prepare students for work in the field of biological sciences, and to develop the necessary professional and transferable skills through a variety of stimulating and varied learning environments that can be built on throughout the students' professional life.
