Sports Law and Business - University of Glamorgan

The degree will allow students to gain an insight into, and understanding of, the complex relationship between the law and the sports business industry. The course will link the commercial, legal and regulatory aspects of sports business, providing students with an in-depth understanding of the ramifications of an industry which is increasingly affected by commercialisation, legislation and disputes. Sport is a multi-million-pound industry, which operates within a quasi-legal system, with a traditionally hierarchical governance model, and special characteristics, which remain unique to the sector. Sports executives therefore not only need to conform to the regulations established by the authorities, but they must also use their understanding of the legal framework to ensure compliance with the law and protect the business from risk. Students will be introduced to domestic and EU sports law, the role of sports governing bodies, international sports federations, and leadership and project management operations across the sports sector. Students will also explore a range of contemporary legal and regulatory issues facing the sports sector, for example the influence of social media within the industry, the complexities of professional athlete’s contracts, product endorsement and sponsorship deals, and threats to the integrity of sport such as corruption and anti-doping. Lectures and seminars will be delivered by both academic staff and industry experts, allowing students to apply theory to practice, enhance their network within the sports law and sports nosiness industry, and to develop their employability skills.
