Our mission is to discover how language is organised, how it is acquired and how it is used for communication. Unlike other English Language courses in the UK, our focus is not on the history of language, but on the contemporary use of English – on the way that we use language, and the ways in which language is changing. You study how children acquire their first language and what language disorders may occur whilst examining the structure of English sounds, words and sentences. You examine how children learn to talk and read and how we produce and understand words and sentences. You explore how age, sex, social background and regional origin affect the way we speak and how languages change over the course of time.
