Our Biological Sciences degree will give you the expertise to comprehend the vast and diverse world of living organisms. You will gain a modern overview on the diversity and evolution of animals, plants, and microorganisms, as well as the fundamentals of cell and molecular biology and genetics. With the flexibility to tailor your degree to your interests, you can take a broad range of subjects to go on to specialise in environment-related subjects, or cell-related topics including immunology, stem cells and cancer. The choice is yours! Research-based teaching is a cornerstone of the degree, with exciting laboratory and field practicals designed to build your skills, optional residential field courses in Indonesia and Portugal and in the final year a research project in your choice of field. You will spend your third year on a placement year with an external organisation. This is usually focussed around your course, and enables you to learn about a particular sector, company or job role, apply your academic knowledge in a practical working environment, and receive inspiration for future career pathways. Located in the School of Biological Sciences, we are one of the largest schools at the University. Two-thirds of our research is rated "world-leading" or "internationally excellent" (REF 2014).ays.
