French and English Literature

This programme will enable you to study French and the literature, artistic developments and theories associated with it, alongside the study of major works of English literature. The programme aims to develop your engagement with the histories, literatures and cultures and societies of both countries. In French, through intense training in the language you will acquire near-native fluency. Beyond the intensive study of the French language, you will explore the exciting contribution of French speakers to world culture. French political and philosophical ideas have played a central role in creating our modern civilisation. As a large subject area, the French department at Edinburgh can offer you a wide range of courses spanning the Middle Ages to the 21st century, including specialist options in literature, film and politics taught by leading specialists in their field. English literature is a versatile academic discipline characterised by the rigorous and critical study of the production, reception and interpretation of written texts, both literary and non-literary; and with the nature, history and potential of the English language. This programme develops a flexible and responsive openness of mind, conceptual sophistication in argument, and the ability to engage in dialogue with past and present cultures and values. The University of Edinburgh is proud to house the oldest department of English literature in the world, having offered courses on rhetoric and belles lettres for more than 200 years. Located at the heart of the city, itself UNESCO's first World City of Literature, we offer a rich array of unique resources which facilitate scholarship and learning.
