English Literature

The course provides a strong foundation in British literature, beginning in the early modern period and moving through to contemporary writing. Alongside this chronological spine of the degree, you have the opportunity to explore literature from other parts of the world, across national traditions and historical periods. Whether modules are organised thematically or chronologically, you’ll be reading with staff and students who share your passion for the written word. Literature opens doors to lives outside our own, and our degree will open these doors for you, too. Our purpose is to teach literature with energy and imagination, and to inspire our students to be thoughtful and perceptive readers, writers, thinkers and citizens. This is a discussion-oriented degree that encourages a range of views and perceptions – our learning environment is supportive, relaxed, inclusive and respectful.
