Accounting and Management

On our BSc Accounting and Management course you will gain the essential skills to work at the centre of a business’s decision-making, influencing its future direction. Your degree will prepare you for a successful career as a management accountant or financial director, dealing with issues such as how much products cost, how much new products or services will cost to develop and take to market, and the financial implications of opening new divisions or closing old ones. On this degree you’ll learn the financial accounting skills needed to ask the right questions and collect and interpret the relevant information. You’ll also learn how to effectively present this information to decision-makers, and how to make recommendations and decisions of your own. This includes learning how to present specialist financial and accounting information to non-experts in a way they can understand. As a management accountant you need to be able to communicate your findings and ideas, including to non-experts and people who aren’t from an accounting background. On this course you will develop your written and presentation skills, becoming a confident, passionate and persuasive communicator. You’ll learn to take complex accounting and financial information and present it in a way that’s simple, engaging and clear. NBS is a friendly and supportive school, with a lively and international cohort. We are in a region that’s safe and welcoming, with a thriving business innovation and enterprise community. We are ranked 6th for Accounting and Finance in the Guardian league table 2018. We were in the top 5 in the UK for overall satisfaction for Finance, Marketing, Management Studies and Business Studies in the National Student Survey 2017. **Course Structure** **Year 1** Across six fascinating core modules you’ll explore the essentials of modern business. This will give you an excellent grounding in not just management and accounting, but also economics, organisational behaviour, human resources management, marketing, supply chain management, and operations management. By the end of your first year, you won’t just have a firm foundation of your chosen subject, you’ll understand all the key disciplines of business. Throughout your future career you are likely to work closely with these disciplines so this understanding is extremely valuable – being able to communicate with and understand other disciplines is a crucial part of management accounting. And should you discover during your first year that your true passion lies with one of these other subjects, you are welcome to change pathways in order to focus on it – an option roughly 25% of our students take advantage of. **Year 2** After exploring all the essentials of business in your first year, you’ll move on to core modules in management and accounting in your second year. You’ll also choose optional modules from any of those offered by NBS. This means you can start to tailor your expertise to your interests and the goals you have for after graduation. **Year 3** In your third year you’ll take just one core module in management and accounting. The rest of your modules will be optional and can be chosen from any of those offered by NBS. This means you can continue to specialise according to your career aspirations. For example you might choose to give your studies an international flavour by choosing International Financial Services and International Business. Or you could focus on the UK by taking modules focused on UK tax and auditing. The annual NBS Module Fair will help you choose the right options for you. Some third year options are only available if you’ve taken specific second year modules, but we can advise you on this. **Disclaimer** Course details are subject to change.
